English 12 - Thoughts on the Vancouver Riot of 2011
I have been huge Vancouver
Canucks fan ever since I was a kid. Watching the Canucks play was a
family occasion. We all got together to watch and cheer them on. So that
day was so intense, so nerve racking and so much excitement just
waiting for game 7 to start. I wanted to go downtown where I thought the
celebration would have taken place for the Vancouver Canucks however,
according to my mother there were going to be lots of people there and
it wouldn't have been safe. As always she was right. I thought they were
going to win as Roberto Luongo said he could only win on home ice but, I was
clearly wrong. As the finial period was coming to an end and it was
clear that the Vancouver Canucks were going to loose. People that were
outside watching from the big screen starting hitting cop cars, starting
to throwing rock at stores window and began stealing merchandise and
others were making out. Once the game actually ended everything went out
of control. There were cop cars being flipped over and put on fire,
people hitting each other and cops hitting civilians trying to control them. I personally was watching the riot live on television and all I saw was lots of individuals putting any item they could find on fire. I'm talking about cars, trashcans, mailboxes etc. I saw many individuals laying on the ground and no body helping them out. I also saw that of individuals just standing by the fire and taking pictures or selfies. This riot went way out of control. I felt ashamed for once to be Canadian. However, I do feel this
riot was going to happen either if they had won or lost. This riot
created a bad image on Canadians and to the city of Vancouver.
Vancouver is a beautiful city filled with mountains , harbors and
wonderful buildings and that was what Vancouver was known for but now
Vancouver is known for this riot.
These two links show first hand how crazy and out of control the riot was.
